The spinal column is composed of a cervical vertebrae, thoracic vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae, and sacral bones. In between each vertebrae lies an intervertebral disc which cushions the spine and acts as a shock absorber with movement.
Neck injuries are common, often occurring in recreational activities, sports, and automobile accidents. Neck pain or injury may also be due to years of bad posture, sitting at a computer too long, or high levels of stress causing tension in the neck and shoulders. A neck injury often causes pain in other areas of the body, including the shoulders, back, and even head. Neck injuries may start out as a dull pain or headache and become so painful that it becomes difficult to complete daily functions.
Treatment for Neck Injuries
Treatment for a neck injury usually addresses relieving pain at first. Treatment for the neck may include modalities such as ice and heat, neck stabilization and stretching. Once the pain is controlled, your physical therapist will develop a treatment plan for increasing the range of motion, strength, and stability of the neck. At JAG-ONE Physical Therapy, we have several staff members and facilities to ensure each patient is taken care of.
